The Windows 10 update policy has caused a number of problems compared to previous versions of Windows. This update adds a number of features to detect changes and fix problems caused by Windows 10 updates.

The Windows 10 update process introduces the behavior that the user has less control over how and when updates are applied, compared to previous versions of Windows. How much control depends on the edition of Windows in use. Windows Home edition provides the user with no control; all updates are applied as they become available to the PC. This includes not just security updates but also driver and other updates. Windows Pro edition allows the user to delay the installation of updates for some time, except for security updates. Windows Enterprise and Enterprise LTSB editions provide more control to the user or organization over which updates are applied.


Driver updates are a problem for INtime because they can replace the INtime 'dummy' driver with a Windows device driver, which is actively in control of the device and may end up in conflict with INtime software.

Windows 10 also introduces the concept of upgrading the whole of Windows to a new version. This occurs not just in upgrading Windows 7 & Windows 8 systems to Windows 10, but also it will upgrade Windows 10 to new versions of the product. One of these was introduced November 2015, and at least two more are scheduled for 2016 and 2017. When this occurs, additional changes are made to the platform which affects INtime. The BCD (Boot Configuration Database) is reset, and all device drivers have their settings reset. The BCD controls how many cores are reserved for INtime and whether memory is allocated externally or from the non-paged pool. Device driver reset will change any configuration you have made to a Windows device driver, including any fixed IP addresses which have been assigned to an interface, including the INtime Virtual Ethernet interface.


Driver

In order to avoid problems as a result of such updates, INtime now performs a check on boot to make sure that (a) any devices which have been passed to INtime have the correct driver (rtdrm.sys) installed, (b) the BCD is correct for the current INtime configuration, and (c) any external memory configuration is correct. INtime may make changes during the boot phase, and if necessary will prompt the user to reboot the system before continuing. If a reboot is necessary then the nodes will not be started.


In addition, INtime provides some hooks to allow the user to execute certain commands when a Windows version change has been detected. For example, when Windows 10 upgrades to a new version of Windows 10, the Windows version is changed. In that case, INtime detects the change and executes one or more commands which have been configured in the registry.

Create a value of type REG_SZ or REG_MULTI_SZ named 'WindowsUpdateCmds'. Each string will take a Windows command as a path to an executable file with any command-line arguments required. These will be executed by a Windows service in the context of the SYSTEM user, before a login session is started. Such commands might, for example, be used to reset a network interface configuration using the netsh.exe command.
